Batman Troubles

I've been working on a big review/column for THE DARK KNIGHT. Here's my problem:

I don't know where to begin.

There hasn't been a movie that deserved as much written about it in some time. Like, I could easily write 10,000 words. This film is begging to be deconstructed.

As for the review, I feel mightily useless. Tuesday night I helped TDK over the edge, passing SPIDER-MAN as the biggest comic book movie of all time. By Monday morning, it will likely be the third biggest movie (domestically) EVER!

In other words, who wants to read a review from me?

BUT I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAAAAAAY!

Maybe I write it from the perspective of, "Once you've seen the new Batman film, read this column. 'Twill give you things to think about."

Even then, how do I limit it? Do I talk about acting? About the evolution of the comic book film? How much attention do I pay to 9/11 implications. Or the biggest factor: Manichaeism?

Argggh!

So... have you given up doing your review?

No. I really would like to see it again before I comment fully. Here's the thing: who hasn't seen it by now? The only people who haven't seen it yet are waiting for the DVD release, or else re-issued in the theater because of Oscar Buzz. Therefore, it makes more sense to wait and talk about it a little later.

Suffice it to say that you could make an argument (I'm not saying I agree with this statement, but you could make the argument) that THE DARK KNIGHT is best movie since RETURN OF THE KING.

Ah, ok. There's no need to rush, anyaway. I usualy love your reviews, and I'm also looking foward to your article on Heroes, and even No Country For Old Men, if you're stil planning on doing it. Still, just as a side note, weren't you just a little disapointed with the absence of Maggie's usual nudity? yeah, I know, there's no context you could fit it in the movie and not look pointless, but still...

First of all, Anonymous, who are you? At the Hyperion Institute we like people with names, even if they are "aliases" for the web. Of course, it's not like you're flaming me without the courage to put your name to it, but still....you seem pretty damn bright and are clearly familiar with my work....do I know you? (Email me privately if you don't want to get into that here.)

As to your questions:

I seriously screwed up by not writing a Batman review when I could. The only salvage of it is to make it an epic 9000 word meta-discussion. Light only knows if I will pull that off.

Article on Heroes is going to be melded into a discussion I had with my brother on the Villians aspect of the current season. Specifically (in case you want to tell your friends), I am planning on talking about the "family" aspect of Heroes, and the Greek Tragedy aspect as well. I hope to work on that this weekend and drop it Monday, in time to give interested viewers some new things to think about as they watch the new episode.

As for NO COUNTRY, my shame on Batman pales in comparison to my shame on not reviewing the five Oscar-nominated Best Picture movies. I wanted to do them all in a "week," and just got off-track. I had a week in August slated, but then events reared their ugly head. Add to that my general inability to keep a schedule (I so desperately an intern/assistant), and here we are 9 months later without competent reviews. I still may try a week, or I may try to shoe-horn JUNO in with SUPERBAD, and do No Country in a Book vs. Movie column, since I have read the book. I suck, I suck, I suck.

Lastly, there is something about Maggie Gyllenhaal that is off-putting to me. I appluad (always) hot girl nudity, and her willingness to do so, but it always feels flouted in Miss G's case. When you see Jullianne Moore do nudity, it always feels natural, as if that character would of course be naked at that moment, without any regard that she's in a movie. I feel like Maggie always knows the camera is on her with her nudity. The (partial) exception would be SECRETARY, but that owes (in my opinion) more to the strong plot. This is a good question! Whoever you are, you should write it in for a future edition of Movie-Hype. Hell, since no one reads these damn comments anyway, I might as well crib these thoughts. HtC

Did you get my comment? I posted it 3 days ago but I'm not sure I did it right...

D - If it's not on here, it didn't go through. Post it again or just email me.

Ah, ok. My comment was more or lese like this:
I commented as anonymous because first I was too lazy to create a google account, but hey... Anyway, I've been reading your articles on a weekly basis for about... 3, 4 years, I think. I found your website while surfing the net when I was, funnily enough, in Vienna, Austria, in a school exchange program. I stumbled across Rank Everything by typing the words "angel" and "hannibal lecter"(it had something to do with "Angel"'s episode "Souless"... never mind).
Even though I usually prefer your articles on entertainment(movies specially, and also tv shows), I read most of what you write. I think the only other time I commented was on the article on portuguese women. As a "tuga", my heart was filled with pride with what my fine(okay, decent) nation can produce.
I am sometimes upset when your late with your posts, but I try to remember myself that unlike the people working on hollywood, tv or the government, nobody's paying you for this. Keep up the good work.
Ps: I'm 18. The concept of off-putting hot girl nudity feels like a strange, alien thing to me.
